The idea of life’s purpose, finding your “spark”, and searching for ultimate meaning is something we tend to often overthink in our day to day lives. A few weeks ago I received an email from Jordan Ross of the Roasting Room in Bluffton, SC (as a part of their monthly newsletter which you should sign up for), and it was a great reminder of how the experience of living and inspiring others to truly live IS the meaning. As Jordan so simply put, "It has always been the little emotions, the little experiences of joy and sorrow, the first sip of coffee, the last bite of pie."

He was referencing the movie Soul, the Disney / Pixar movie featuring Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town, which depicts our human instinct in questioning "what is it that makes you...YOU?"

Jordan and his pal Tom Crenshaw dive into these concepts with me on this week's Dharma Digs episode, where we also discuss how they've cultivated a mindful and present crowd of music lovers in their town of Bluffton, SC. I really enjoyed this conversation, as they share unique stories and experiences of the raw emotion that can come from the magic that is live music.

Our segment two quotes to ponder as you're tuning in are below:

  • “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes a memory.” ~ Dr. Seuss

  • “Remember, we are all affecting the world every moment, whether we mean to or not. Our actions and states of mind matter, because we’re so deeply interconnected with one another...and you and I are the force for transformation in the world. We are the consciousness that will define the nature of the reality we are moving into.” ~ Ram Dass, Be Here Now

Jordan & Tom's segment three shares are:

Hospice Care of the Lowcountry - Hospice Care of the Lowcountry is an independent, community-based, non-profit organization, serving Beaufort and Jasper counties for more than 30 years. It was established to give comfort and honor dignity for end of life patients and their families through compassionate physical, emotional and spiritual care, regardless of their financial circumstances.

“Our philosophy of care is as much about living well as it is about experiencing end of life in a manner that is dignified, compassionate and as stress-free as possible.”

We help our valued patients and their families experience the fullness and dignity they deserve, even as they face the anxieties associated with the end of life.

Deep Well Project - A predominantly volunteer-based non-profit, with a minimum of paid staff, The Deep Well Project has been helping neighbors in need since 1973. The organization was founded by Charlotte Heinrichs as a service to the local community that suffered illness as a result of drinking contaminated water from shallow wells. Over the decades, other needs evolved and so did "Deep Well" (as it's known on the island). We help people in emergency situations by giving them an immediate hand up so that they can continue to help themselves. It could be a rent payment between jobs or food for the family when the cupboard runs bare and when cash has all but run out. It could be school uniforms for children or floor repairs or the construction of a much-needed wheelchair ramp. Deep Well receives no government-funding and over 90% of each donation goes directly to program services.

Our mission: We help neighbors in need by providing basic assistance in emergency situations. This assistance is immediate and non-bureaucratic, and it's intended to provide clients with "a hand up, not a hand-out."
